Fifty Shades of Grey: Starring the Magnolia Table

Sometimes I am watching TV or a movie and I spot something that I designed, and then I get unreasonably excited because no one actually knows I designed it except me and a small handful of people I used to work with. A few weeks ago, I was watching “Fifty Shades of Grey” (it is terrible, but in a trainwreck can’t-look-away kind of way), and I spotted a table that I designed while working at Four Hands. The table is in a few scenes, but is easiest to spot when Christian’s mom (Marcia Gay Harden) visits Christian (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) meets her for the first time. They walk through the foyer and past the staircase, and there she is: the Magnolia table that I designed way back in 2008.

New Apartment on Design*Sponge

Our apartment was featured on Lonny a few months ago, and before the photos were published, we had already moved to a new place just around the corner. As my business was growing, we decided to get a larger apartment so that I could have a studio in our home. As soon as we moved in, Grace from Design*Sponge reached out to see if we would be interested in having some photos taken of the new place. They photographed the space in August, and the post went up a few weeks ago. Below is a sneak peek, and you can see the whole tour on Design*Sponge.

The Story of Desi: Part 1

The Desi collection actually started out as a school project when I was in graduate school.  I was working on my thesis, and decided to focus on fair trade. In my previous job I had spent a lot of time designing furniture to be manufactured in Asia, and I wanted to learn more about opportunities overseas to work with factories that employed socially responsible manufacturing practices.

KatyMadurai

I began by doing lots of research on the World Fair Trade Organization, Fair Trade Federation and other organizations supporting the idea of social responsibility. Through the WFTO I found a few factories in India that were fair-trade certified and reached out to them to find out more. I focused on India because I had traveled there several times, and love the people and culture. I also saw the devastation of poverty and disease in the country […]

Journal Entry #1: Aqua Walls and Octagon Table

In college, I had a professor that made us keep a creative journal where we would record ideas, sketches and any inspiring images we came across. This was way before Pinterest, and while I do love to pin things, I still tear things out of magazines and make little journal entries. Unfortunately, I didn’t start recording my sources until recently so I don’t have sources for everything but I still like to look through them and get inspired. Each page represents months if not years of design. I try to group everything on a page so that it looks good together, no matter what the image source or genre is.Journal-1

I am so in love with these aqua walls – especially with the symmetrical artwork and styling.
